Who needs a full night to rest anyway?
In my most recent post, I left off with Starbucks being the last destination in Singapore. Once we charged enough battery, Tim and I jumped into an Uber. The Uber took us to the bus station that got us to BP Central. Once we wandered around JB Central bus station, Tim figured it’d be much better to get to the big cities.
Better accommodation + better food selection = less stress.
To get to city, Kuala Lumpur, we had to hop on another bus. If the transportation is hard to follow, FYI it is really for my personal memory**
Starbucks > Uber to JB Central bus station > Bus to Kuala Lumpur > Uber to hostel.
But before the last Uber, we needed once again, more juice (cellphone battery life). Tim sat on the floor, waited patiently for his phone to charge while waiting for our departure bus time. I, on the other hand, strolled around a couple convenient stores.
Snacks = transportation energy
Strangely, I remember purchasing Pocky sticks.. A flavor that was different and only available in Malaysia. I typically go for two different flavors for bus travel, sweet and salty. At the second convenient store, it was much more lively. A couple young adults, not sure if they were teens, were bumping music. Luckily, at that moment, I was able to Shazam it. I have it saved in my out-of-the-country playlist.

I clearly remember Tim saying, it’s 24 hour reception, so we should be fine. By the time we got to the hostel, it was anywhere between 2:00 AM – 4:00 AM. We checked in, placed our shoes at the shoe rack and got escorted to our room. The hostel was not at full capacity. Which means Tim and I got a 4 bunk dorm to ourselves! It’s nice to be pay a small price, have a room to ourselves and not worry about the safety of our personal belongings.
This is the country where I found my love for Indian Chai tea.
By morning, January 29th, 2023 Tim shared his experience with a particular Indian restaurant who gave exceptional food and customer service. When attempting to re-live that memory, the restaurant was replaced. We met the new owner and they served us an Indian breakfast. I had a dosa and three sides.
What we later realized, this day was Chinese New Year. Tim and I got to watch the dragon dance at Petaling Street. This is where I purchased my water resistant North Face crossover bag. The bag became very helpful for the upcoming rainy days.

Eventually, Tim and I switched to an Airbnb – this spot had a pretty view at our bedside. I could see the city, the freeway, and the weather change from sunshine to raindrops. The studio provided a comfy bed, a washer and dryer (which is a luxury!!), our own kitchen (cooked some mac and cheese), a TV.. (binge watched a lot of Amazing Race) and a rooftop pool. The pool had to be reserved in advance due to COVID. From here you could see all well known skyscrapers. It was a cold to dip into the water because of the wind but definitely became one of the best views for a “city rooftops” category.
We visited the Jalan Alor Street Food Night Market. Rows of stalls and restaurants. We had an early seafood dinner – met a sweet, European couple (for busy streets like this, it is common to share tables). We tried Pastel de Nata, a pastry (the first time we tasted one was in Rio, Brazil). And during our Uber wait-time, we enjoyed mango sticky rice for dessert.
Batu Caves Murugan Statue – words that would fall under description: colorful, vibrant, stairs, gold statue, limestone, monkeys, (families of monkeys running up and down the roofs/statues/temples/stairs, wanting attention & food, playing with bells, one was fed popcorn, the list goes on)
Requires appropriate clothing wear so I purchased a sarong.
A colossal gold-painted statue of Murugan made from reinforced concrete and 140 feet (42.7 metres) in height, stands near the base of a flight of 272 steps”

Petrona twin towers – would light up to beautiful colors, when we were roaming the streets towards it, it was red, blue and white, transcending to rainbow. Typically it shines bright and white. Next to the towers was a pretty, small light-show water fountain (slightly reminded me of Vegas).

Tried Pakistan food – amazing!! Tim and I had to walk off the car ramp to get to the pedestrian stairs that lead to the sidewalk. The difficulty of exiting/entering our Airbnb was an everyday struggle. The accessibility was challenging for us, for tourists, for taxis, for anyone really. Luckily, we were still able to walk to the mall, a dim sum spot, a Pakistan restaurant and more.
Open every Wednesday evening at 7:00pm is longest market of Malaysia called Taman Connaught Night Market. This was a great food indulging night. We tried baos, fresh pomegranate juice, Thai iced tea, stir fry noodles – Malaysian dish. WORTH VISITING SO MUCH TO TRY AND SEE.
